You need to install a version of FINAL FANTASY XIV from the Nintendo eShop (check here for the different available versions). In addition to that, a Square Enix Account is required to play. If you do not have one, please register for a new account here.
A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required to play the Nintendo Switch 2 version.

If you are unable to download the game from the Nintendo eShop or update the client, please try the following steps:
Test the internet connection on your Nintendo Switch 2
Perform a test to check whether your Nintendo Switch 2 is properly connected to the network. Go to System Settings → Internet → Test Connection to check whether your Nintendo Switch 2 is connected to the network correctly.
Perform a system update on your Nintendo Switch 2 Ensure your console is up to date. Go to System Settings → System → System Update to update the system to the latest version.
Restart your Nintendo Switch 2 Press and hold the power button on the top of your Nintendo Switch 2 console for 3 seconds, select Power Options, then select Restart from the power menu.

Restart network devices
Turn off the power of your router and/or modem for 30 minutes to an hour.
Unnecessary data cached on the equipment will be cleared, possibly allowing for smoother connection.
Update firmware of network devices
Update your firmware for your router/modem if an update is necessary. If the firmware is outdated, your equipment may not function properly, so please update the firmware before trying to update the game again.
Refer to your device's help manual when updating firmware. Even if your firmware is up to date, reinstalling it may resolve the situation.
Check security services of your Internet provider
Security services may be included as part of your internet provider service plan. Please ensure that these security services permit online gaming.
Remove routers
Temporarily remove routers and/or hubs to diagnose the issue.
This may change your connection to a broadband connection. Please consult with your provider for connection settings.

For example, see if you can input text in the Nintendo eShop or log-in fields. If you cannot input text in the home menu, it is possible that there is an issue with your console or peripherals.
Remove the keyboard from your Nintendo Switch 2 and re-insert
If input is malfunctioning temporarily, re-connecting the keyboard may resolve the issue.
Insert the keyboard in a different port
